Paleo, I’ll meet you half way

I can’t say that I’m 100% on the paleo bandwagon. In fact, if you had asked me 6 months ago, I would of told you that I wasn’t even going to watch the parade. Give up cheese, milk, and yogurt? No thank you. But now, many tummy aches, one elimination diet, and a packed food diary later, I’ve discovered that I’m already half way there. More than halfway actually.

Since I started my food diary and my elimination diet back in February I’ve learned that despite my love for cheese, I really should eliminate dairy from my diet, as well as all grains, especially corn. Now, this presents a bit of a conundrum; if there is one thing I can’t say no too, it’s tortilla chips. Their salty, crunchy, perfectly dippable nature always has me going back for more. Now when I’m at home, this isn’t a problem, they don’t even make it into my shopping basket these days. But put me in a social setting, like a bbq or dinner at a Mexican restaurant? It turns into one. giant. struggle.

The key is to be prepared. Melissa Joulwan of The Clothes Make the Girl summed it up perfectly in her latest blog, “5 Painless Ways To be a (Paleo) Social Butterfly”.

While I don’t always eat before meeting up with friends for some socializing, I do always make sure to bring an emergency snack with me just in case things don’t quite go to plan.

  • Hey… thanks for the shout-out! Snacks are essential for navigating the world of ‘regular’ food.

You’re not alone — corn tortilla chips are my nemesis, too. Darn that salty goodness!

So many of my health issues have vanished or gotten significantly better now that I’m on Paleo (almost done with month three). A few weeks back we were having Mexican food, and I caved, eating a ridiculous amount of corn tortilla chips. Deliciousness. But within a few minutes I had excruciating stomach pain that lasted for nearly 12 hours. It’s just so not worth it. Now to repeat that to myself the next time I’m tempted….

o man! That’s brutal! Luckily, I only get bad stomach pain when I eat something with gluten, I just don’t think my body really likes the corn chips as much as I do. Congrats on the three months!
