Do a Backflip! It Will Make You Happy!

Posted by piphunt on February 22, 2011 in Adventures of Pip, skiing |

Yes, backflips can equal happiness; or at least that silly, butterfly rushing, I’m-upside-down-and-now-I’m-not, giggling kind of moment. Flippy things? Well, it was Carston’s advice after all. And if anyone is the king of flippy-spinny-things at Alta, it’s definitely Carston. Somedays, I just need another reason to smile. I know, it just snowed 34″ inches and I shouldn’t need anything else to put a massive grin on my face. But you know what? I think American culture has caught up to me, even all the way up at Alta. Guilt. You know, that I don’t think I’m working hard enough and I have a million and one other things that I should be doing right now but I’m kind of feeling? Well, for a professional skier, this guilt is a little complicated. Ttechnically, it’s my job to get out there and ski. But as a J-O-B, I get so caught up in getting the shot, updating my blog, and filming for a webisode (or who I can film with) that just skiing is almost a little weird to me. I can get too caught up in what my Sponsors want, not what I want, when at the end of the day, we probably just want the same thing: to love skiing!  It’s like the days I don’t have a shoot penciled in are the days I hang in the valley, run some errands and let my body rest.

Today easily could of been one of those days. It was 10 am and I was sitting in my kitchen, fully dressed, my backpack packed, my boots waiting patiently and I debated whether I was actually going to go up. Was the snow even going to be any good? Who am I going to ski with? I bet the light sucks… I pulled out my phone and texted Carston. Ah Carston, my little gem of motivation. Carston, rips, smiles, laughs and doesn’t care who he is with as long as he is having fun. But my favorite part? He has bad days too, and he admits that there are days when you just want to do something else. He’s actually human. Not to totally bash on the overly enthusiastic individuals who are constantly raving about how rad the conditions are (even post rain). But seriously, we all know that it just rained, and it’s like a piece of East Coast ice was misplaced upon our fluffy Utah snow. Yet even though, we all have days where we feel like throwing in the towel, Carston reminds me that we can always make a day on the hill fun, even if we have to try a little harder to find that smile. Like doing it a backflip – it will definitely make you smile.
